Chapter Sixteen

Eve wasn’t normally the sexual aggressor, not that this kiss was anything more than tentative. Still, he didn’t kiss her back. Why would he? He’d walked away from her this morning when she’d been nearly naked and definitely willing. When he’d been ignorant of the baggage she carried. When she hadn’t truly known him. Had wrongfully assumed what kind of man he was.

She pulled away. “I’m… I’m sorry.”

“No, don’t be sorry.” A flash of panic raced across Adam’s face and his voice held a sliver of desperation. “You surprised me, is all.”

Truth be told, she’d surprised herself. Confessing her secret to him was a relief, like lifting the world off her shoulders. Funny how the weight of responsibility for one little mini-drive was a thousand-fold its actual mass. Or maybe this was less about removing the weight entirely, but sharing the burden with someone else. Someone strong and capable. Someone she hoped she could trust.

Someone who wasn’t what she’d pigeonholed him to be.

“Don’t stop. I‘m over my initial shock.” His hand at her back pressed her closer and his lips lifted in a grin so wickedly handsome, her core clenched and she caught her breath. His gaze dropped to her lips. “You won’t be sorry this time.”

He’d misunderstood her apology. Eve lifted her hand to his cheek, loving the slight rough texture of his stubble. “I wasn’t apologizing for the kiss. I meant, I’m sorry I assumed you were a simple bar bouncer with rap sheet and a troubled past.”

“I am a simple bar bouncer with a rap sheet and a troubled past.” He leaned in for a kiss.

Eve pulled back and frowned at him. “You have a rap sheet?”

His grin turned impish and his shoulders hitched in a half-shrug. “I have a few parking tickets I’m late paying.”

“Oooh, such a hardened criminal.” She snickered, but it ended with a needy sigh. She reevaluated her attraction. Bad boys with tattoos had always been her weakness, not that she’d ever had the nerve or the opportunity to date one. But the cowboy type with the southern drawl which stripped away any reservations with a single darlin’ also made her insides quiver. And who didn’t love the promise of protection from a first responder?

And she’d been hot for him before. Lava ran through her veins, burning from the inside out so her body fairly vibrated with need. She tipped her forehead to his, her voice thick with desire. “Adam, please tell me now if you have groceries to put away or expect a friendly visit from local law enforcement or just aren’t that into me.” She drew a deep breath, his campfire-bourbon-metal scent filling her nose and lungs. “Because I want you. I want you to… I want to…”

She swallowed, her nerve evaporating, unable to say how much she wanted to be with him. To…

“Fuck me.” Adam groaned as if it was his last breath, a completion of her thought, a statement of his own. A declaration of surrender.

He whispered her name as a reverent prayer and kissed her.
